Lateral Damp
Lateral damp is very common where houses are built into hillsides, or have split levels. For this reason, the problem often occurs in townhouse complexes, where split ground levels are a common feature.
Symptoms of lateral damp include, flaking or blistering paint, and the presence of efflorescent salts on the masonry surface.
Lateral damp can be treated with the correct use of Safeguard SWS or Latseal slurry. Any affected plaster or render is removed, and SWS/Latseal slurry is applied using a block-brush to the prepared surface - creating a waterproof barrier. Once the SWS/Latseal slurry has cured, a new coat of plaster or render can be applied. The exact specification will depend on a number of factors, such as the exact type of construction, and the condition of the underlying brick/blockwork - please contact our technical helpline for details.
Boundary walls invariably are affected by Damp since by law no dpc sheeting may be fitted. However, in addition such walls are often badly affected by Lateral Damp where ground level between properties is at differing heights. Treatment with SWS or Latseal slurry can prevent the passage of moisture through the walls.
